US aircraft carrier arrives in Norway to take part in drills with armed forces

A U.S. aircraft carrier arrived Wednesday in Oslo with the Norwegian armed forces saying it gives them "a unique opportunity to further develop cooperation and work more closely with our most important ally, the United States." The nuclear-powered ship USS Gerald R. Ford entered the Oslo fjord escorted by a rapid dinghy-type boat with armed personnel on board. The Norwegian armed forces has said any boats must stay a half-mile away from the aircraft carrier and a no-fly zone was created over the area where the aircraft carrier was. Described as the largest aircraft carrier in the world, the vessel will stay in the Norwegian capital until Tuesday. It is then expected to take part in drills with the Norwegian armed forces, reportedly in the Arctic. The ship's first foreign call was broadcast live on Norwegian public television . Onlookers, some using binoculars, were seen on land watching as the large aircraft carrier glided deeper and deeper into the fjord and eventual

Recent shark bites scary, but serious injuries remain rare

Recent shark bites in Florida and Hawaii and a suspected case in New Jersey have piqued interest in an age-old summer question for beachgoers — is it safe to go in the water? Scientists and researchers who study sharks said the overwhelming answer to that question is yes, it is safe. Potentially dangerous interactions between humans and sharks are uncommon, and serious injuries and deaths from the bites are vanishingly rare, scientists said. Nonetheless, the dramatic nature of shark bites and the stories of survivors, such as Hawaii surfer Mike Morita's tale of fighting off a shark in April, capture the imagination. It's a good idea to remember just how rare shark bites truly are, scientists said. How often do shark bites occur? There have been typically around 70 to 80 unprovoked shark bites annually, worldwide, over the past decade. And not only are shark bites rare, they've been especially rare recently. White House backs GOP bill to classify fentanyl as Schedule I substance

The White House announced Monday it supports a Republican-led bill that would place all fentanyl-related substances under the most dangerous classification of drugs. The Halt All Lethal Trafficking of Fentanyl Act, led by Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-Va., would expedite research into fentanyl-related substances and classify them all under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. That classification is for drugs that have no medical value and are highly addictive. Bud Light buying back unsold, expired beer from wholesalers as sales continue to suffer: Report

Bud Light has reportedly informed wholesalers it would buy back unsold once it expires as the company continues to face backlash from its polarizing pact with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The Wall Street Journal published a lengthy feature on the company’s struggles after conservatives across America have ditched Bud Light over the saga that began in March when Mulvaney publicized that the  beer company  sent packs of Bud Light featuring the influencer’s face as a way to celebrate a full year of "girlhood." Backlash was swift and the promotion is now considered one of the most polarizing in the history of the digital space.  Now it seems parent company Anheuser-Busch is taking steps to help wholesalers who have taken a hit.  "The brewer recently told its wholesalers that it would buy back unsold cases of beer that have gone past their expiration date," the Wall Street Journal report.  BUD LIGHT IN ‘SERIOUS TROUBLE’ OF LOSING STATUS AS TOP-SELLING BEE

German prosecutors charge 4 for violating trade act to sell spyware to Turkey

German authorities have filed charges against four suspects from a Bavarian company accused of selling surveillance software to Turkey that could be used to spy on Turkish dissidents, prosecutors said Monday. The Munich prosecutors say the defendants intentionally violated licensing requirements for dual-use goods by selling surveillance software to non-EU countries. The charges were filed at the Munich I Regional Court . GERMAN GOVERNMENT DENIES THAT IT PUSHED TO WEAKEN COMMITMENT TO PHASE OUT NATURAL GAS The company's surveillance software, FinSpy, was offered for download in 2017 via a fake website to the Turkish opposition movement under false pretenses in order to spy on them, prosecutors said. Rep. Byron Donalds, Chuck Todd clash over debt negotiations, IRS agents: 'That's salacious and you know it'

Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., clashed with NBC's Chuck Todd on Sunday during "Meet the Press" while debating debt limit negotiations and "extra IRS agents."  Todd asked Donalds about former President Donald Trump's remarks on debt negotiations in 2019 and Donalds argued that when Trump was negotiating the debt ceiling with Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., "our economy was thriving" and that "our debt levels were not where they are right now." "Now you have $32 trillion on the credit card and all House Republicans are saying is let's go back to pre-pandemic spending, that's commonsense stuff," Donalds said.  "They want fewer IRS agents and fewer attempts to properly get tax receipts into the federal government’s coffers. I have never understood the resistance of extra IRS agents unless you knowingly cheat on your taxes," Todd said.  BYRON DONALDS SLAMS DEMOCRATS FOR DEBT CEILING ‘CALAMITY’: HOUSE REPUBLICANS ‘TH

NYC Mayor Adams: Migrants should be sent to every city 'throughout the entire country'

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, said in a new interview Sunday that migrants from the U.S.-Mexico border should be sent to every city "throughout the entire country." "We have 108,000 cities, villages, towns. If everyone takes a small portion of that, and if it's coordinated at the border, to ensure that those who are coming here to this country in a lawful manner is actually moved throughout the entire country, it is not a burden on one city," Adams said in an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation" Sunday. "And the numbers need to be clear. We received over 70,000 migrant asylum seekers in our city, 42,000 are still in our care. If this is properly handled at the border level, this issue can be resolved while we finally get Congress, particularly the Republican Party, to deal with a comprehensive immigration policy." Amid reports that the White House and fellow Democrat Adams have butted heads over the migrant crisis, notab

McCarthy announces 'productive' budget call with Biden, says they will meet 'personally'

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., will meet with President Biden on Monday to continue negotiations on raising the debt ceiling, McCarthy announced Sunday. Biden and McCarthy spoke on the phone Sunday and had a "productive" conversation, McCarthy said, despite throwing barbs at one another in public statements. Biden has stated that the current Republican offer is "unacceptable" and complained that McCarthy has been dragged to the right by "MAGA Republicans." McCarthy, meanwhile, has claimed the opposite. "I just finished a phone call with the president," McCarthy told reporters. "I believe it was a productive phone call." Biden is currently on his way back to Washington after attending meetings with G-7 nations in Hiroshima, Japan. McCarthy says he told the president to get some sleep and get briefed up on the current state of negotiations after being absent during the international trip. WHAT IS THE DEBT CEILING, AND WHAT D

Biden blasted for barking at reporter to ‘shush up’ during Japan G7 summit meeting: ‘If Trump does that…’

President Joe Biden’s critics called out the world leader for telling a reporter to "shush up" while he was meeting with the Australian prime minister at the latest G7 summit in Japan. Annoyed Twitter users slammed Biden as condescending for the command, with some pointing out that if former President Donald Trump had done that to an overzealous member of the press, he wouldn’t have heard the end of it from his usual critics.
